Social Policy, the Media and Misrepresentation

In the story above you have two examples of how media misrepresented two different African American males.  First, Trevon Martin who was a 17 year old male however People Magazine used a photo of him when he was 12 years old for their cover story. Second, Time Magazine used a photo of accused murderer O.J. Simpson as their cover story. The problem was they intentionally darkened the photo of Simpson making him appear "more black" then his natural light skin was. Both magazines used these photos to glamorize each of the crimes committed for different reasons.

Over One Hundred Years of Misrepresentation

In this article, which gives examples dating back to the late 1800's,  children's books have severely misrepresented minority groups in negative ways. This was done by producing negative photos and stereotypes of African Americans as well as other minority groups (see article for images). These books give the same image of minorities up until the time period of 1965 when an article, published by  Nancy Larrick,  gave insight on the need for more authentic books of color. In this article it breaks down children's book by time periods giving you.

Social Action

The media misrepresentation of black, indigenous, and other people of color has been portrayed everywhere over the past years. These people need our help to spread awareness and make sure that the misrepresentations are dealt with and forgotten about. We all know how it feels to be picked on, or made fun of. It is not fun when you are the one especially when it is something that you can not change. The Black, Indigenous, and People of Color movement also known as BIOPC fights for these people. This movement first appeared in 2013 but after the death of George Floyd, this movement has grown. With the help of others, this movement will continue to grow and we can furthermore get closer to the goal of equality. Goals are hard to achieve, but may never be achieved if you do not try. The BIOPC mission is to build a lasting solidarity among those of color. The co founders Merle and Fiona want people to know they are not alone. That they should team up and fight this together. For more information you can go to https://www.thebipocproject.org/. We also created a petition for everyone to sign to help spread awareness. By going to http://chng.it/q5rhXCMn and signing the petition you can help millions of people around the world.
