The Problem

The issue we believe facing the community is wrongful convictions and prison reform. This issue is becominig a big one as more and more people just end up back in prison after going there for commiting a crime. Its either for a crime or being convictied wrongfully. if you would like to know more please read the paper below.

The Policy Solution

During most recent years there has been plenty of controversy regarding the defunding of the police due to racial profiling and the systemic flaws within most prisons. In Michigan we do not have many systems in place to prevent or reduce recidivism and wrongful convictions, to fix this:

  • Research has proven that states that have reform and rehabilitation established in their prisons have improved many inmates’ lives after prison by giving them the tools to be successful.
  • Additionally, what also needs to be initiated in Michigan for the justice system is the Criminal Justice Reform Commission also known as the Innocents Commission. This would stop and prevent wrongful convictions from happening.
  • Required training standard for preventing racial profiling to be in the profession of criminal justice to prevent this occurring issue of racial injustice.

Opposing Arguments

What are people saying about the issue from both sides?

The opposing viewpoints will say that the best approach to reducing crime should be receiving harsh punishment. People want to make more prisons and give criminals longer prison sentences maintain that money should be spent on preventing individuals, young people, from becoming criminals and recommend prevention measures include education, job training, proper parenting, health care, and drug treatment. Primarily, incarceration is regarded as a punishment for criminal offenders, taking away their liberty and their ability to control their own lives. Such punishment gives crime victims, their families, and society a sense of retribution, or justice. But a criminal should pay for the act they committed; with that it comes with loss of personal freedom, locking up criminals also protects the public. An example is numerous experts suggest that strict punishments and long prison sentences do not necessarily keep people from committing crimes.
