Finding Scholarly Sources for History Research

Delta Library’s History Resources Library Research course focuses on locating scholarly sources for history research and is appropriate for HIS 111/112 and HIS 221/222 students. This course is available as an asynchronous course in D2L/Brightspace or as an in-person session. This course takes about 45 minutes to complete. 

This course covers the following topics: 

  • What is a scholarly source? 
  • Finding scholarly sources (surface vs. deep web) 
  • Accessing the HIS 111/112 and HIS 221/222 research guides 
  • Search strategy and tips 
  • Using OneSearch to search multiple databases and find articles and eBooks in one search 
  • Finding and using articles in OneSearch, including printing, saving, emailing, and citations 
  • Finding print books 
  • Using Google Scholar with Library Links 
  • Interlibrary loan 
  • Contacting the library for help 

HIS-237 History of Michigan Civic Engagement Project Research

Delta Library’s Library Research HIS 237 (Michigan History) Civic Engagement Project course focuses on locating scholarly sources for the historical analysis portion of the civic engagement project. This module is available as an asynchronous course in D2L/Brightspace or as an in-person session. This course takes about 30 minutes to complete. 

This course covers the following topics: 

  • Identifying characteristics of scholarly or academic sources
  • Developing a good keyword search strategy for the civic engagement project 
  • Locating scholarly/academic sources in library resources
  • Search strategy and tips 

History Research Guides

Research Guides provide descriptions and links to databases popular for scholarly history research, lists of new history books available, citation resources and search tips.
