What is Drug Abuse ?

 

 The habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs. The use of illegal, prescription or over counter drugs for the wrong purpose they are needed for, or in excessive amounts. Types of Drugs

Stimulant Abuse- is the continued use of stimulants despite harm to the user. Stimulants include cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly), and prescription drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin. (Substance Use: Stimulant Use Disorder - Mental Health (va.gov))     

Cocaine Abuse- “Pure cocaine is a flakey white powder derived from the coca plant of South America. There are three forms of cocaine: cocaine hydrochloride (white crystalline powder often mixed or cut with other substances), freebase (a pure form, free of the hydrochloride additive) and crack cocaine (white or pinkish crystals extracted from the powder with baking soda and heat)”.(Cocaine: Addiction, Side Effects and Treatment (hazeldenbettyford.org )

 Methamphetamine Abuse- and crystal meth, "a form of the drug that looks like glass fragments or shiny, bluish-white rocks," are stimulants that are chemically related to amphetamines. their management of some health conditions. For someone with ADHD, amphetamines can have a calming, focusing effect. When not used for medical purposes, stimulant drugs make users feel more alert and attentive, with lots of extra energy. Opioid Abuse- opioid use disorder (OUD) is a complex illness characterized by compulsive use of opioid drugs even when the person wants to stop, or when using the drugs negatively affects the person’s physical and emotional well-being. Opioids are a broad group of pain-relieving drugs that work by interacting with opioid receptors in your cells. Opioids can be made from the poppy plant — for example, morphine.  Prescription Drug Abuse- “Prescription drug abuse is the use of a prescription medicine in a way not intended by the prescriber. Prescription drug abuse, also called prescription drug misuse, includes everything from taking a friend's prescription painkiller for your backache to snorting or injecting ground-up pills to get high. Prescription drug abuse may become ongoing and compulsive, despite the negative consequences”. Some missed used drugs are opioids, stimulants and Anti-anxiety medicines, sedatives and hypnotics.  Benzodiazepine Abuse-Benzodiazepines, sometimes called benzos, are a class of drugs prescribed by doctors to treat many conditions, like anxiety and seizures. Common benzodiazepines include alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), and diazepam (Valium).Like many prescription drugs, benzos can be misused by taking them in higher doses than prescribed, or without a prescription at all.(Substance Types and Effects: Benzodiazepines (shatterproof.org )

Hallucinogen Abuse- Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs that alter a person’s awareness of their surroundings as well as their own thoughts and feelings. Drug Use Statistics and Demographics

  • 75% of drug overdose deaths in Americans over the age of 50 years is from opioids.
  • Amongst college students who use illegal drugs:
    • 93% use marijuana, 37% use cocaine, 36% use hallucinogens.
  • Individuals who have previously abused drugs recently released from prisons have the highest risk for overdose from drugs.
  • Ecstasy, cocaine, meth, LSD, ketamine, and other ‘club drugs’ are most frequently used by higher-income youth.
  • 53 million or 19.4% of Americans in the over-12 age group have used an illegal drug in the last year.
  • 11.7% of Americans in the over-12 age group are regular users of illegal drugs.
