What is Overpopulation?

Many people believe that the world and the quality of life we have in it is diminishing daily. People draw conclusions as to why this is happening with many different reasons, varying from pollution to pandemics. Though, these are correct there is a root to all of these problems. That would be overpopulation. Overpopulation is the condition when the human population becomes too large to be sustained by the environment and its resources in the long run. With so many people in the world, and not enough room, problems like pandemics and pollution do become a lot worse and spread a lot faster.

Causes of Overpopulation

  • Falling mortality rates, an imbalance of birth and death rates.
  • Infant mortality rate decreased globally having 4.1 million infant deaths in 2017 compared to the 8.8 million deaths in 1990.
  • Global life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900.
  • Contraceptives are underutilized with an estimated 214 million women in developing countries who want to avoid pregnancy not utilizing the modern contraceptives that are available.
  • Lack of female education, plenty of evidence suggest that theres is a negative correlation between female education and fertility rates.

Overpopulation and the Domino Effect

As stated in the introduction, overpopulation causes many disasters such as deforestation, pandemics, pollution, etc. A newly passed bill that many are enraged over is the Willow Project. Although this bill revolves mainly around economical problems a large population still plays a massive role in the issue. The Willow Project will allow drilling for oil on Alaska's North Slope, ultimately destroying the environment and all living beings in it. Because of our already huge and still growing population, lawmakers and businesses see fit to drill for oil locally and not have to seek foreign help because it would be cheaper and there is supposedly 600 million barrels of oil in that location. This situation relates directly to the prophecy of the Cree Indians,"When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money."

How to Help

There are multiple different ways we can improve our overpopulation problem. For one we can make more of an effort toward helping women plan for a family, we can do this by really educating the women of the world on this topic and letting them know the effects of having children. Secondly we can increase the agency of women. By this meaning to let women have more authority in their household. Lastly we can debunk myths about contraceptives. Many of these myths hold women back from using preventatives to having kids. As a team we can help the environment thrive, which will in turn, allow us to thrive as well.
