Part One: Raising Awareness

What is Unemployment?

Unemployment is the state of being unemployed or not having a job.

What is Underemployment:

Underemployment is when a worker is employed but their work hours or wages have been reduced or changed for reasons other than the workers request.

Some may find it alarming that there has been little movement in unemployment since early 2022.  The unemployment rate is at 3.6% and the number of unemployed persons at 5,900,000 as of Febuary of 2023.

Not only are 18 million Americans unemployed; millions more are now underemployed, their lost hours translating into lost wages translating into lost consumer spending, while emergency unemployment insurance payments expire, eviction moratoriums lapse, and Congress remains deadlocked.
